Reading club: Activity 2

Excel Resource Center of English held its second activity on Friday,October 23 at 14:30. The members of the reading club, after reading The Legends of Sleepy Hollow, by Washington Irving, watched a short cartoon (about 24 mns long) about the same story. They enjoyed the comical ghost story and talked about its main characters; namely Ichabod, the school teacher, Brom Bones and Katrina. The themes discussed were human greed and selfishness as well as the contrast between the natural and the supernatural. All club members said they were not superstitious as they do not believe in ghosts. We all enjoyed the discussion and decided to embark on reading another story. The only problem is that there aren’t enough copies for all the students. So, they will read by turns.

Creative Writing

Students were asked if they had ever seen anything strange. Then, they  were shown a picture and asked to describe and talk about it. Next, they read a short story, To help them remember the details, they were asked to recall the events and answer some questions. They were also given an exercise on adverbs of time to help them with sequencing events. Finally, they worked in seven groups to write a short story about a strange thing they had seen. A student from each group read the story, and the best story was chosen by voting.

When students were asked at the beginning whether they liked writing or not, most of them said they didn't. But in the end, they said that they really enjoyed it.
